At the risk of overstating it, the extra speed is non-trivial—it isn't simply a matter of apps loading faster or performing better in the abstract, but the basically instant response and speed of action lends an air of verisimilitude to everything you do. Despite numerous obvious shortcomings, the iPad is sold out. The device will likely continue to do well for the rest of the year, as people embrace it because is not a traditional tablet computer, but rather a utilitarian device that does all sorts of new things. This stems from the fact that tablet computers have traditionally been laptops without a keyboard. And the most successful tablets of the past—convertibles—eventually added the keyboard back on.

The iPad is something different. The device eschews the old paradigm completely by not being a sketchpad/handwriting recognition device. The lesson, I suppose, was learned from the Newton, the company's first attempt at such a machine. It was mocked for its miserable handwriting recognition function. Apple didn't even try that this time.

Instead the company made the weird, but logical, step toward the small, easy-to-use app-oriented, touchy-feely UI. The iPad enlarged this new paradigm, which completely eliminates the desktop metaphor with its endless file folders. Now we have buttons everywhere. Instead of mousing around on the desktop, opening and closing folder after folder or plowing through endless lists, you go from one self-contained app to the next.

THE GOOD: In an act of aggressive tech convergence, Apple has consolidated your Netbook, e-reader, gaming device, photo frame, and iPod into an elegant, affordable supergadget. Features such as Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, movie rentals, 10 hours of battery life, optional 3G wireless, and the most-celebrated App Store on the planet have us pretty worked up.

THE BAD: The iPad's large size is as much a hindrance as it is an advantage. As a jack-of-all-trades and a master of few, the iPad can't entirely mimic many of the specialized products it seeks to replace. The iPad's limited multitasking capabilities and lack of integrated video camera, Flash support, and HD video output already have us pining for next year's model.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Apple iPad is the first affordable tablet computer worth owning, but it won't (yet) replace your laptop.

he Apple iPad is an unprecedented device. It doesn't shoot rainbows or make puppies, but this roughly 8x10-inch tablet computer melds your laptop, smartphone, gaming console, and iPod into a single, affordable, unfortunately named thing.

Of course, we come to you with a standard list of complaints. The absence of an integrated video camera puts the kibosh on any hope of using the iPad for video chats, and without Flash video support, many Web pages look like Swiss cheese. But the biggest problem with the device is coming up with bullet-proof reasons to buy one.

Because the iPad is an entirely new class of device, you'll probably need to lie to yourself a little to justify the purchase. But at this point, any CNET readers worth their salt have mastered the art of making excuses to buy new gadgets.

For the uninitiated, Apple has posted a cheat sheet of demo videos that provide a smorgasbord of reasonable answers to the question: "Why do I need an iPad?" To hear Apple tell it, the iPad is a Web browser for your living room, an e-book reader for the den, a movie player for the kids, a photo album, a jukebox, a gamer's best friend, a word processor, an e-mail machine, and a YouTube junkie's dream come true. No excuse good enough for you? Wait a few minutes and a developer will inevitably make an app for it.

Whatever you need to tell yourself to buy an iPad, we can safely say the device is a worthwhile addition to any wired home. We don't give much weight to the pundits who say that the iPad is the future of the personal computer, but we think it's the most entertaining gadget we'll see all year.

What is it, exactly?
If you're coming to this review already versed on the nitty gritty of what the iPad is and its roots in the iPhone and iPod Touch, feel free to skip ahead. Otherwise, here's the scoop:

The iPad is a touch-screen tablet computer, roughly the size of a magazine, with three models that connect to the Internet strictly over Wi-Fi (16GB for $499, 32GB for $599, 64GB for $699) and three that use a combination of Wi-Fi and AT&T's 3G wireless (16GB for $629, 32GB for $729, and 64GB for $829--pay-as-you go for the data subscription).

The iPad runs the same software found on Apple's popular iPhone and iPod Touch. Apple calls this software the iPhone OS, and it's generally regarded as one of the most successful operating systems designed for use with touch-screen devices. Unlike conventional computer OS software, designed around the mouse and the keyboard, the iPhone OS responds only to touch input and is generally capable of running only one application at a time.

Design
Apple rarely skimps on design and the iPad is no exception. The screen is made of the same oleophobic-coated glass as the iPhone 3GS', making it relatively easy to wipe away fingerprints. Behind the glass is an LED-backlit, 9.7-inch capacitive touch screen that uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology for above-average viewing angles.

Below the screen sits a Home button that looks and behaves exactly like the one on the iPhone and iPod Touch, bouncing you out of any open app and placing you back in the main menu. Matte aluminum wraps around the backs and sides of the iPad, tapering a bit around the edges. If you've ever held one of Apple's unibody MacBooks, you know exactly the kind of feel and finish of the iPad's aluminum. Unlike the polished chrome of the iPod or glossy plastic of the iPhone, the back of the iPad seems less likely to show wear. Of course--as with any Apple product--there are already hundreds of cases for the iPad, should you feel the need to give it extra protection.

The iPad measures 7.47 inches wide by 9.56 inches tall by 0.5 inch thick, and weighs 1.5 pounds (or 1.6 pounds for the 3G model). Held in your hands, the dimensions and heft have a natural, magazine-like feel. Like the iPhone and iPod Touch, the iPad sports a finger-friendly OS with an onscreen QWERTY keyboard, and an accelerometer that can detect whether the device is in portrait or landscape mode. The buttons, switches, and ports around the edges of the iPad also mimic those of the iPhone. A 30-pin dock connector sits on the bottom, along with a small integrated speaker. On the right edge you have a volume rocker and a switch that works to disable the iPad's automatic screen rotation in case you need to look at something sideways without the iPad assuming you want it rotated.

The iPad's refined feel and high-quality materials won't surprise Apple devotees, but in the larger landscape of tablets, Netbook computers, and e-readers, the design feels distinctly upscale--especially given its price. Next to the Asus Eee PC, Amazon Kindle, or Fusion Garage JooJoo, the iPad looks like it was made on a different planet (where plastic doesn't exist). We don't make the point to be snobby, but looks matter considering that all these devices are marketed as living-room accessories.

Size also matters. As one of the first tablet computers to go mainstream, you'll need to assess the iPad's size on a case-by-case basis. For the advertised purposes of Web browsing, reading books, and checking your e-mail, we found the magazine-size screen perfectly adequate. After years of watching videos on devices like the iPod Touch, or even dedicated video players like the Archos 5, video playback on the iPad's 9.7-inch screen feels downright luxurious.

For all its charms, however, the iPad is not as portable as we'd like. Part of the problem is psychological. Logically, you know the iPad's dimensions are no less portable than a book. But when a book costs between $500 and $800 and is made of glass, you treat it differently. Without being tucked away in a messenger bag or protective case, walking outside with an iPad in your hand feels like slapping the laws of gravity in the face.

We'd also be lying if we didn't say we wish the iPad could be a little thinner and lighter. At 1.5 pounds and half an inch thick, it makes most Netbooks look bloated, but he iPad is slightly heavier and thicker than most dedicated e-book readers, including the relatively large Kindle DX. If your dream is to relax in a hammock with an e-book in one hand and a tropical drink in the other, plan to avoid the iPad's glass screen hurtling toward your face when you doze off.

It is a gorgeous spring day when I arrive at the coolest address in the universe: 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, Calif., where Apple has been headquartered since 1993.

The campus, for such they call it, is enormous yet not big enough to contain Apple's current rate of expansion. An additional site is being designed and built. After stocking up on "I visited the mothership" T-shirts at the company store (we fanboys are pathetic, I readily confess), I am shown around the canteen, lawns and public spaces. It is right to call this a campus, for everyone looks and dresses like a student. I should imagine the only people ever caught wearing suits here have been visiting politicians.
Phil Schiller and Eddy Cue are suitably bejeaned and relaxed as they welcome me for a talk about the iPad, Apple's new product, which will be launched in a week and a half. Schiller is senior VP of worldwide product marketing, responsible for delivering Apple's latest baby. Cue is VP of Internet services, overseeing the iTunes, App and iBook online stores.

I am here at Apple's invitation to try out the iPad, and later in my visit I will spend an hour with the company's boss, Steve Jobs — the first time I've ever spent any real time with him. But as I meet with Schiller and Cue, I feel it only fair to reel off the list of negatives the iPad will meet on its release. It falls between two stools — neither small enough to be truly portable nor big enough to be called a proper computer. Everything, I point out, is under Apple's control, as usual. No Adobe Flash capability, no multitasking, no camera. It's just a scaled-up iPhone or iPod Touch.

"There's a negative way of saying that," says Schiller, "and a positive. 'Oh, it's just a big iPhone ... boo!' or 'Hey, it's like a big iPhone ... cool!' Luckily, millions of people have those, so there is an instant ease and familiarity when they first encounter the iPad. As for everything else, it's not about the features — it's about the experience. You just have to try it to see what I mean."

I, of course, am itching to try it, but first Cue takes me through the iBook application and its online store. There has been much talk of the iPad's dealing a death blow to Amazon's Kindle reader; publishers, it seems, have long yearned to escape from Amazon's tough control over pricing. I asked John Makinson, chairman and chief executive of Penguin, why he's so keen on the iPad. He told me he likes the fact that "it gives control back to us and allows us to discover how the market is developing. Frankly, when I saw the iPad, it was like an epiphany ... This has to be the future of publishing. You'll know if you've spent any time with one." "Yes," I say. "I hope to try one out soon." Tracy Futhey, of Duke University, is similarly optimistic about the iPad's potential in education. "The iPad is going to herald a revolution in mashing up text, video, course materials, student input ... We are very excited," she says. "Have you tried it?" "Er ... Not yet."

Then there's games. Many will see the iPad chiefly as a gaming platform. Michel Guillemot — founder of Gameloft, one of the most successful developers for the iPhone — is even more passionate about the iPad than Makinson and Futhey are. "I see this as the fourth step of the games evolution," he told me. "First the microcomputer, then the dedicated console, next the smart phone and now the iPad. What do you think?" "I'll let you know," I say, "when I've actually played with one."
And soon, I would. I thought I knew what to expect. For I've been playing with Apple products for a long, long time.

We’re still more than a week away from knowing what it’s like to have a giant iPod touch in our hands, but developers have been anything but idle. With Apple’s March 27 deadline for iPad apps looming, many of them have been hard at work prepping what may be the first third-party apps for the new device. Among them, Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, who posted a sneak peek of what the forthcoming supersized version of his app will look like.

Instapaper is an extremely popular iPhone app and service that let you earmark Web content to read later. It’s especially handy on the iPhone and iPod touch for when you want to read something and you’re not online: Instapaper lets you download the page to your local device for plane or subway trips.

Like pretty much all the other independent developers, Arment has had no chance to actually handle an iPad, relying instead on a cardboard mockup. But if Steve Jobs’s debut of the iPad was any indication, reading is a major thrust of the device, so it’s little surprise that Arment is working hard on a version of his app, despite his reservations.

The iPad version of Instapaper looks, unsurprisingly, a lot like the iPhone version, albeit with a few concessions to some of the iPad’s new abilities, like popover windows and a split view in landscape orientation. Arment also confirmed that Instapaper Pro will be a universal app for iPhone and iPad, meaning that if you buy it once, you can install it on both devices. And current Instapaper Pro owners will get the iPad version gratis.

Whether or not Instapaper will surface at the iPad launch is still ultimately up to Apple, but even if it doesn’t make the initial batch, it will probably appear sooner rather than later. Plus, any delay just means that Arment gets a chance to refine it after actually getting to use an iPad. So, for those of us eager to use Instapaper on our iPads it’s a win-win situation.

(NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released the results of a survey of 2,176 Internet users regarding their awareness, attitudes and opinions of the Apple iPad and other e-readers/tablet devices. Results were analyzed across age and gender profiles, as well as the “iOwners” consumer segment, defined as those owning either an iPhone or iPod Touch. The complete results of the study are available for purchase (details included at bottom).

“The tablet and e-reader market is developing at a breakneck pace right now, and Apple’s entry into the market is sure to accelerate mainstream consumer adoption,” said Serge Matta, comScore executive vice president. “These devices have the potential to be incredibly disruptive to the way consumers currently access digital content. While only time will tell exactly how consumer behavior will change, our research suggests that not only will a variety of markets be impacted by the introduction of these devices but also that there are substantial opportunities for those in the digital content ecosystem.”

E-Reader Awareness and Purchase Intent

Consumers were asked several questions regarding their awareness of various e-readers and tablet devices and their past purchase behavior or intent to purchase these devices. The results showed very high awareness of the iPad out of the gate, with an aided awareness of 65 percent, the same as that of the Amazon Kindle e-reader. Overall, consumers have demonstrated a high level of interest in these types of devices with between 58 percent and 69 percent of consumers having conducted online research of the top five devices. Amazon Kindle rated highest in terms of current device ownership at 6 percent of all Internet users, followed by Sony Reader at 4 percent. The iPad rated highest in terms of consumers seriously considering purchase over the next three months at 15 percent of Internet users, with the Kindle at 14 percent.

Consumers were also questioned about which features and activities they would be most likely to use if they owned an iPad, with responses indicating that they viewed the iPad differently than a traditional e-reader. Just 37 percent of respondents indicated they were “likely” or “very likely” (i.e. top 2 boxes) to read books on the device, 9 percentage points higher than those who indicated they would be “unlikely” or “very unlikely” (bottom 2 boxes). Nearly half indicated a high likelihood of using the iPad for browsing the Internet (50 percent) and email (48 percent), while more than one third said they would use it for listening to music (38 percent), reading books (37 percent), maintaining an address book/contact list (37 percent), watching videos/movies (36 percent), storing and viewing photos (35 percent) and reading newspapers and magazines (34 percent).

Two of the deals that Apple needs to get the iPad out of the starting blocks quickly has just come through with the signing of two new book deals, one with the biggest of the independent publishers.

As we have been saying in this space, Apple needs deals with some big-time content publishers in order to make good on their promises for the iPad as a media powerhouse. There has been no big news during the last few days about newspapers, magazines, films, or television but Apple did sign two book deals for iPad content, one of them of truly major importance. Perseus Books Group, a large independent publisher that distributes works from 330 other smaller presses plus its own mark has inked a deal with Apple to provide content to the iPad, according to the New York Times. Perseus publishes for such large independent houses as Grove/Atlantic, Harvard Business School Press and Zagat. Apple has already signed iBookstore deals with five of the big six publishers.

Apple has also signed a deal with Workman Publishing Company, one of the major independent publishing labels. Workman is the publisher of the What to Expect series and Page-A-Day Calendars and the iconic 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, and also handles publishing chores for Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, Artisan, HighBridge Audio, Storey Publishing and Timber Press. They bill themselves as a “medium-sized independent publisher” or items such as “calendars, cookbooks, parenting/pregnancy guides, and fun, educational children’s titles, as well as gardening, humor, self-help, and business books.”

Apple promised a great deal of content when they announced the iPad, but signing deals with content providing companies has proved more difficult than expected. There has been a bit of a war going on with Amazon on book pricing, but that seems to have settled down with Apple in a good position. There has been some movement with publishers of magazines, but no big announcements since the one regarding Conde Nast. The newspaper business seems to be in total disarray. On the film and television front, the big content producers still seem afraid to sign big iPad deals because that might anger the networks and cable companies that are their major customers. Still, these two new book deals bring the iPad one step closer to fulfilling its media promise.

HP gets Slate ready to battle iPad

While Apple's iPad faces an onrushing sea of competition when it hits the market April 3, one of the most formidable and intriguing challenges comes from Apple's neighbor, computer heavyweight Hewlett-Packard.

HP, which is planning to release its Slate this year, has been ramping up the marketing for its coming tablet and appears ready to go toe to toe with Apple CEO Steve Jobs' latest creation. In one slick Apple-esque video that appeared just after Apple began its iPad commercial campaign, HP showed off the Slate performing multitouch browsing of Web pages, newspaper sites and maps. Phil McKinney, chief technology officer of HP's personal systems group, has also been making the rounds touting the Slate as a powerful media device.

"We predict users are looking for that consolidated device, that one device they can use for the ultimate content consumption experience," McKinney said in a recent video interview. "The feedback that we got from our customer base is: I want to be able to browse, I want to able to watch movies, I want to be able to listen to my music, I want to read magazines and do books. So the Slate device can give you not only reading capabilities but also give you that rich media."

While the devices share some physical similarities, they are a study in contrasts in technological approaches to the tablet. While Apple and many other rivals are coming at the market using mobile operating systems paired with smart phone processors, the HP Slate takes a computer-based approach: The device will run Windows 7 with an Intel processor, presumably an Atom, which is often used in netbooks. The question boils down to whether a tablet is an oversized smart phone or a slimmed down computer.

"In some ways, Windows and Intel is a safe bet," said analyst Bob O'Donnell of IDC. "You have things that are important for people like Adobe Flash, and a lot of other things that people are used to. The question is how do people use them: like a big smart phone or a totally different way. That remains to be seen."

O'Donnell said the stakes won't be high initially but will grow over time. IDC is predicting that just 6 million tablets will be sold this year, with 2 out of every 3 an iPad. Meanwhile, netbook sales are expected to reach 39 million this year and 45 million in 2011.

Still, HP has plenty to prove in the tablet market. While it has led the world in PC sales, it recorded just $25 million in handheld sales in the most recent quarter. Apple, by comparison, clocked $5.6 billion in iPhone revenue in the most recent quarter.

Jayson Noland, a financial analyst with Robert W. Baird & Co., said HP was late to the netbook game and hasn't done anything with its iPaq line of smart phones. But he says the company has a good reputation in computers and has developed its own touch software called TouchSmart, which he said will help HP compete in this space.

"Tablets are more like PCs than cell phones," he said. "I think HP's heritage here lends itself well to a tablet device. This is an opportunity for HP. They haven't shown they can execute in the handset PDA world yet."

HP played up some of the benefits of its computer approach with a video showing how the slate will run Adobe Flash, the Web technology that powers 75 percent of online video. That's sure to be key factor in its face-off with the iPad, which won't support Flash.

Microsoft, Intel

The fate of the HP Slate will have implications for partners Microsoft and Intel, which are working hard to make sure they are part of any emerging tablet revolution. Critics and competitors have argued that Windows 7, even with new multitouch support, isn't suited to finger input, while others question whether Intel's chips can provide the battery life necessary to compete with power-sipping smart phone processors.

"The way Intel has historically sold, they make a bigger device with a huge battery," said Michael Rayfield, general manager of the graphics processing unit group at Santa Clara chipmaker Nvidia. "But what people want is a thin, attractive device with days of battery life, and you can't do that on the (Intel) architecture."

Rayfield said Nvidia's Tegra mobile chips are being worked into more than 50 tablet designs in development.

PC qualities

Anil Nanduri, technical marketing manager for Intel, said an Intel-Windows combo in a tablet can give people the power and flexibility they expect from a PC. He said Intel has also squeezed more efficiency out of its Atom chips to the point where netbook manufacturers are getting 10 hours of battery life for some devices.

"We're able to get lower power with better performance," Nanduri said. "We clearly have a strong roadmap, and our processors can be used very well in this emerging consumer tablet space."

For HP, the Slate is actually a long time coming. McKinney said the device was born in HP Labs five years ago, but wasn't ready for release because it carried a price tag of $1,500, which would have kept it a niche product.

Now, he said, the pieces are in place this year to make HP's tablet a mass-market success.

"There's now this convergence of low cost, low-power processors, Windows 7 with an operating system that's touch aware, the ability to create these platforms with new kinds of touch technology and hit that price point," he said. "So from that standpoint we think that 2010 is that perfect timing."

In addition to their own respective e-ink hardware devices, booksellers Amazon and Barnes & Noble will also release their own separate digital bookstores for Apple's iPad and other touchscreen tablet devices.

Both companies revealed to The New York Times that they will create new digital readers and storefronts in addition to their existing applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. The App Store software will also compete with Apple's own iBooks application and accompanying iBookstore, which will also be available for download on the App Store rather than coming preinstalled on the device.

In particular, the Kindle application from Amazon was demonstrated to a Times reporter. It features the ability to slowly turn pages with fingers, much like Apple's own iBooks software.

"It also presents two new ways for people to view their entire e-book collection, including one view where large images of book covers are set against a backdrop of a silhouetted figure reading under a tree," the report said. "The sun's position in that image varies with the time of day."

Amazon also created a section on its Web site to promote Kindle apps for tablet computers, and the promotional material specifically cites the iPad version of the software.

"Tablet computers, including the iPad, are coming and with our free app you'll be able to read more than 450,000 Kindle books," the page reads. "Like all Kindle apps, Kindle for tablet computers will include Whispersync technology, which automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights across your Kindle and Kindle compatible devices, including PC, Mac, iPhone and BlackBerry."

Last week, Amazon released the free beta of its Kindle desktop application for the Mac. For Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and newer, the software allows Mac users to purchase and download from Amazon's catalog of digital books without the need to purchase Kindle hardware.

Meanwhile, Barnes & Noble has a team of 14 developers based at its digital unit in New York, working in a "windowless room" on redesigning the company's existing iPhone application for the iPad. It will reportedly allow users to use finger gestures to flip through their books, and present content in multiple font sizes and colors. Earlier this month, the company had already revealed its intent to release an iPad e-reader application.

While some media outlets, such as the Times and The Wall Street Journal have received iPad hardware for testing purposes early, Amazon and Barnes & Noble have not had access to the device. One recent report said the Journal's iPad was kept "under padlock and key,", and the Times report this week said essentially the same thing.

"The companies must agree to keep the iPad hidden from public view, chained to tables in windowless rooms," it said. "This although the basic look of the iPad stopped being a secret in January."

Because Barnes & Noble and Amazon have only been able to test their applications in the simulator mode included in the iPhone OS 3.2 software development kit, they will not have software available for the iPad's April 3 launch date. However, the Journal, Times, NPR and Time magazine will all reportedly have applications available for download at launch.

Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble also have their own black-and-white e-ink readers, dubbed the Kindle and Nook, respectively. One recent study found that consumer interest in the Kindle dropped sharply after Apple introduced its multimedia iPad, which features a full color LCD screen.

Apple has started accepting new iPad apps for review and approval, ahead of the US launch of the tablet-style computer on April 3.
The iPad app store will go live on the day of launch, and developers need to submit their app by March 27 to stand a chance of being among the first apps featured on the dedicated iPad store.

Many developers are yet to actually see the iPad, Apple's touch-screen, tablet-style computer that was first unveiled in January. Instead, developers have had to run their apps on an emulator, which simulates the interface of the iPad.

Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble are creating ebook applications for the device, reports the New York Times, despite the iPad featuring its own digital download service, the iBookstore.

“We have actually developed a tablet-based interface that redesigns the core screen and the reading experience,” said Ian Freed, vice president of Amazon's Kindle ebook division. “Our team had some fun with it.”

The expected iPad app gold rush echoes that for the iPhone, which went on sale in 2007. The iTunes App Store, which launched in July 2008, sparked an "app revolution", with dozens of other mobile phone makers and operators scrambling to launch their own dedicated portals through which customers could buy and download extra software and programs. More than three billion applications have been downloaded from the App Store by iPhone and iPod touch users to date.

However, some app developers say they will wait to try an iPad first hand before releasing an app. "As much as we'd love to be there on Day One, a misstep could kill the train before it even gets out of the station," Wade Slitkin, chief executive of Panelfly, which makes digital comic book readers, told the New York Times.

Although Apple is launching a dedicated iPad channel on the iTunes App Store, the majority of applications already written for the iPhone and iPod touch will work on the new tablet-style device. Just days after the introduction of its first Kindle for Mac application, US retailer Amazon has provided a first look at its upcoming Kindle Apps for Tablet Computers.

The device-specific applications, thought to be made available in the coming weeks, are being shown with a specific focus on the Apple iPad.

The Kindle App for iPad, pictured above, will feature a redesigned user experience revolving around a new home screen that lists books on a back drop designed to alter based on the time of day.

In the above pictured example, the sun will rise and set in real time.

Hoping to embrace the iPad's fluid user interface, Amazon has also tailored the feel of its tablet application, stating that it has adopted the iPad's page-turn animation. Users who prefer a simpler reading experience should note that the app will provide the option to revert to "Basic Reading" mode.

Perhaps suggesting that the iPad's backlit display won't be quite as comfortable as its own e-ink Kindle readers, Amazon's tablet app will also offer the added ability to "customise background colour and font size to ease eye strain".

Although a confirmed release date for the tablet-specific Kindle App remains unknown, Amazon is said to be one of many working furiously to ensure its application is present on the iTunes store for April 3rd, the day on which the first US iPad deliveries will be made.

According to The New York Times, Amazon competitor Barnes & Noble is gearing up to introduce its own competition in the form of a rival application. According to the site's sources, 14 Barnes & Noble developers have been working in a "windowless room since January" in an attempt to completely redesign its reader application for the iPad.

Apple has thus far remained coy in regards to which new applications will be available for the iPad on launch day, but the huge success of the App Store suggests numerous high profile apps will be forthcoming.

The Apple iPad tablet computer is just a couple of weeks from shipping and the company is still working hard to secure the deals it needs on media content, including print media and video of all kinds.

Apple is not having the success it anticipated in cutting deals with newspapers, magazines, and book publishers, or the producers for film and television content, according to sources close to the negotiations. Apple is not saying much about problems, trying instead to keep things on a positive and upbeat note on the ramp up to the release of the iPad. However, sources outside the company say that the media deals are not closing as quickly as Apple anticipated, according to a Wall Street Journal story. Given that the iPad is being sold primarily as a media powerhouse, the lack of significant media content at launch could be a thorny problem for Apple.

The primary problem is a lack of commitment to the tablet computer, or any other digital medium, as a replacement for more traditional sources of revenue. Despite an acknowledgement that financial problems are rife in the publishing industry, a theory backed up by the bankruptcy of many newspapers and magazines, publishing companies seem unwilling to give up those failing but familiar sources of income in favor of new business models that may be their salvation. On the television and film side of the equation, produces of visual media seem to be afraid of moving deeper into the mobile entertainment market because it may anger their traditional sales partners, like the television networks and cable companies.

Although there has been much written about the iPad and its ilk being the salvation of the publishing industry, there will be no salvation if the industry itself is afraid to take the leap to mobile digital. Worse, the new Apple mobile device can only save the industry if it sells well, and it will only sell truly well if there is a lot of content available. It is hard to tell which is the chicken and which is the egg, but without Apple and the publishing industry feeding off each other, the iPad could see a less than optimal launch and newspapers and magazines could continue to swirl in the toilet.

It must be getting close to April 3rd because the iPad news is hotting up. Today we get our first glimpse at Amazon's free Kindle app for the iPad. We've also got a Barnes & Noble app on the way courtesy of a report in in the New York Times. The Kindle app has been completely redesigned by a team of 14 developers working since January to redefine the core screen and reading experience to allow for custom fonts in multiple colors, slow page turns, and new ways to view your eBook library. One view, pictured above, presents your books as large icons against a silhouetted figure under a tree -- the sun changes position in accordance to the time of day. Of course, the app also gives you access to the Kindle bookstore (assuming Apple approves) and saves your reading position so that you can pick up any Kindle app (or device) and continue reading right where you left off.

Fortunately, Amazon's Kindle App will be targeting tablets beyond the iPad. We're also hearing that Skiff is almost certainly headed to Apple's tablet, and we suspect as many competitors as possible given the plethora of devices demonstrated to us at CES. So seriously, we ask you, in an age where content is king, are you really going to buy an eReader dedicated to a single store?

Apple's iPad will Kill Netbooks

The iPad and likeminded tablets have the potential to introduce a new paradigm for personal computer that just might kill the netbook space altogether.

I speak with a number of folks in Taipei who build parts for leading PC companies, including Dell, HP, and Acer. Many of them have asked me the same question: could the iPad kill netbooks? The reason for their concern is clear—at present, about 40 million netbooks are sold a year. A major decline in that number could have a huge effect on their business.

When answering this question, I point out that most market forecasters believe that the netbook market has already peaked, and it will gradually decline over the next few year. This prediction is anchored in the fact that mainstream laptops are getting thinner, lighter, smaller, and cheaper. They're already encroaching on the netbook space. The ideal small computer for most consumers has a 12 or 13 inch screen, full-sized keyboard, weighs less than three pounds, and is priced below $700. Netbooks will continue to be cheaper, but they are well known for their limited functionality. Most PC manufacturers believe that they can persuade consumers to "upgrade" to ultra thins. Netbooks won't go away completely, but the space will certainly decrease in popularity over time.

But the iPad and other tablets may become a major disruptor in mobile computing. If manufacturers get things right, the world of mobile computing may change rapidly. Sure we have had commercially available tablets for more than 20 years now, and all have failed to catch on in a major way. Still, we have never seen a tablet quite like the iPad before. Apple's device has an elegant ecosystem of hardware and software and an easy-to-use multi-touch interface.

As early adopters put the iPad and other tablets through their paces over the next year or so, we will discover a new paradigm in mobile computing. In addition to smartphones, tablets will become the top mobile computing device for many consumers. The iPad and other tablets will introduce a new level of flexibility and functionality and will actually change the way we interact with the Internet, data, and media.

This new experience will be embodied in what I call the "lean back/lean forward" computing lifestyle. Today's PCs offer the lean forward mode. We sit at our desks or hunched over our laptops when we work. Even if we're just reading or watching a movie on our PCs, we're largely leaning forward to experience and interact with content.

But if we're watching TV or even using an e-book reader like the Kindle, we sit in our chairs and lean back. I have used the lean back mode to experience content on slate tablets and the iPhone. It's a comfortable way of accessing, viewing, and interacting with information on the screen. If I want to compose a long e-mail, write a column, or do other work, however, I'll get out of my easy chair, go to my desk, and pop open my laptop. I attempted to write a column on a slate's virtual keyboard, whilst leaning back in my chair. By the time I got to the third line, I just gave up. It's really not a very natural way of working.

When using the iPad, I expect that 70 percent of the time I will be in lean back mode. This includes Web surfing, games, and movies. If I want to do work with the thing, I'll pop it into its keyboard dock and lean forward. I expect that more than 50 percent of iPads sold will go out the door with the docking keyboard for lean forward work.

Admittedly, it's a gamble for Apple to take a lead in this space. Very little of the consumer research done thus far predicts a major shift in computer usage following the introduction of the iPad. But such device could help people approach personal computing in a much more personal way.

If Apple and the competition strike the proper balance of ease of use, simple multi-touch interfacing, and an ecosystem of apps and services, these devices just might succeed in killing off the netbook space. They may also help us learn and play with the next generation of digital content that will soon be at our fingertips.

Apple’s upcoming device, the iPad, has long been seen as a competitor to Amazon’s Kindle. Not only may the iPad bring about the end of the Kindle, but it may help Apple cash in on a market that the Kindle was never able to: education.

Of course, Apple does sell many products on the education market. But the iPad may be especially convenient for students because of its small size, e-reader capabilities, and versatility. The Kindle was tested at several major universities and just seemed to lack something and was never a good fit for students.

Recent estimates speculate that Apple may be shipping as many as 190,000 pre-ordered iPads to customers in the first week of the iPad’s release (this is just a guess, though, as no official numbers have been released). Perhaps in a hope of catering to the education market, Apple has lowered the price of the iPad by $20 when ten or more of the devices are ordered for educational use.

The Wall Street Journal reported the iPad’s sales figures, citing “people familiar with the matter.” The Journal’s story detailed how Apple was racing to secure content deals ahead of the iPad’s launch April 3.

Apple and media companies are negotiating pricing on TV shows. Deals with publishers—newspapers, magazines and textbooks—have been put on the backburner for now.

Not so surprisingly, media players are apparently weighing the risks and rewards of making Apple the content gatekeeper.

In any case, it appears that the iPad won’t be launching with its full content arsenal when it hits the streets.

After the iPad officially opened to pre-order on Friday, CNN took a sample of iPad and other Apple product purchasers to try to get a glimpse at how exactly the fabled tablet is doing in sales. The conclusion? Damn well--but that's not the whole story.
Based on a sampling, CNN estimates the total product sales at Apple's online store to be about 125,000 on Friday. Once you subtract the average sales of 16,500 and multiply by the average number of iPads bought (1.1), you come up with just shy of 120,000 iPads sold. It's an estimate, sure, but a conservative one, and that number is reasonable.
Interestingly, we also find out that that 1.1 order per person is lower than expected; Apple capped the number of iPads per person at 2, but it seems like they needn't have bothered. Aside from that, we find that all three versions by capacity (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) sold almost exactly equally, but about 70% opted for the Wi-Fi-only model, compared to 30% for the 3G model. That latter stat makes a bit more sense when we take launch dates into consideration: the 3G model won't be out for a few weeks after the Wi-Fi-only model, and those pre-ordering want to get their hands on an iPad as soon as possible.

Here’s some more healthy Asus Eee Pad rumors that we hope are true. Asus is known for doing two things: building a cheap product and satisfying a niche consumer need. Both of these sound like good news when applied to the tablet market.

To start, the Asus Eee Pad is now rumored to be using an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset. If true that means we could be seeing 1080p playback on our slate tablet. It also represents a faster tablet than those being announced in the last few months (like the shamefully specced Toshiba JournE Touch). We still don’t know if the Eee Pad will have a diminutive 4-inch screen or a more-than-likely larger 7-inch pad, but we’ll be waiting anxiously to see. Expect more news in the first few weeks of January with a possible launch date of March or April.

The folks who hang out at Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board are too impatient to wait for Apple (AAPL) to announce sales figures; they much prefer to work them out on their own — in real time.

Entering the order numbers associated with their own purchases on a Google spreadsheet, they think they've cracked the code. As of 11:05 a.m. ET — two and a half hours after Apple's online store began taking pre-orders — the group had received 15 confirmations with order numbers as high as 74,000 (the numbers don't necessarily start at zero and include non-iPad purchases).

"51,000 orders in two hours," announced Victor Castroll shortly after noon. He's an analyst with Valcent Financial Group and an AAPL Sanity member who, with the blogger-analyst who calls himself deagol, has been monitoring the spreadsheet.

His estimate — which is adjusted for the roughly 15,000 online orders that come in a typical day — jibes with a 20,000-per-hour figure published earlier by Silicon Alley Insider. That number was based on two sales made within 30 minutes that were 10,000 order numbers apart. Rumors from the supply chain suggest that Apple may have as few as 300,000 units available for sale on April 3.

Although it’s almost a given that the Apple iPad will sell well, there are still many complaints about the lack of various features such as multitasking (which might appear later this year), and the lack of flash support, pen input amongst other things. There are a number of alternatives out now or soon to be out though. CrunchGear put together a list of seven alternatives that are either available, or arriving this year sometime. There’s actually eight although Crunch Gear for legal reasons cannot specifically mention the JooJoo due to the Crunchpad/Fusion Garage break up late last year.

Rather than rehash the complete list here, I’ll just mention a few of my favourites which can be found below.

The 32 GB model is for my own use and review purposes, while my wife and stepdaughter will share a 16 GB version. Both devices are Wi-Fi models: We have Wi-Fi here at home and I pay for a Boingo Wi-Fi account, plus a 3G MiFi device to use on the road. With the MiFi, I can share 3G with multiple iPads, netbooks and notebooks over Wi-Fi.

While many folks are ordering, some are indecisive on the connectivity options because they’re unsure of how the 3G service is going to work. Typically a 3G plan requires a long-term commitment, but not so with the iPad. Now that Apple has laid out the details of the 3G service, they’re worth closer inspection. From what I can see, this is mobile broadband done right.

Right off the bat, you won’t need to sign up for a 2-year contract to use 3G on the iPad. That’s a huge selling point right there — in fact, I expect many to splurge the extra $130 for the 3G option. Why not plan ahead and pay for the ability to use 3G on an as-needed basis? Again, I’m totally covered with my other plans and devices, but if I weren’t, I would have gone with the 3G option. Contract-free is generally more favorable than a lock-in. Mobile technology is changing far too fast for the standard 2-year contracts. It’s for this reason that I paid full price for my Google Nexus One handset: I have the freedom to change phones — and service providers — whenever I want to.

If you are not interested in Apple’s coming iPad and have no intention of buying one, then you may want to skip this post. But if you’re already readying your tent and fold-up chairs to wait outside an Apple store for the company’s latest offering, then please read on.

As Apple announced last week, the iPad will be available for prepurchase just hours from now, with the Wi-Fi-only versions arriving in stores on April 3 and the 3G models showing up later that month.

Ever since the configurations and their prices were announced in January, Bits readers have e-mailed me asking for input on which iPad to buy: 3G or Wi-Fi only? The answer to that question could make a big financial difference, since the 3G versions cost $130 more upfront and an extra $15 to $30 a month, depending on your 3G usage.

So how do you make a smart decision? This Q&A might help:

I’m primarily going to use my iPad at home. Wi-Fi should be enough, right?
Yes. If you plan to use your iPad principally at home, getting the Wi-Fi version is a no-brainer. With a stable, constant source of Internet connectivity, you can use all of the iPad’s features as much as you want without the additional cost of 3G. When you don’t have a connection, you’ll still be able to use some embedded applications like e-mail, photos, video, contacts, calendar and the iBook reader in offline mode.

What if I want to use the iPad in my office also?
This depends on your Wi-Fi connectivity at work. If your office has Wi-Fi, then you’re in luck. If not, you could ask your computer administrators to set up a wireless router. But, if they say no for security reasons, you could try getting a group of co-workers together to buy a wireless cellular hub from Sprint or another mobile provider.

What if I’m out and about. Is there free Wi-Fi I could use?
You will be able to use the Internet in the broader world if you can find a Wi-Fi hot spot. There are many spots available for free or a small price — a lot of parks and coffee shops offer free connectivity, for example.

Regular users might find it more economical to join Boingo Wireless, which offers a $9.95-a-month plan that allows you access to its more than 125,000 Wi-Fi hot spots at Starbucks coffee shops and various airports and hotels.

I’m often traveling for work. Should I get the 3G version instead?
Probably. The 3G version of the iPad would pay for itself in no time.

The 3G cellular data service, provided through AT&T in the United States, costs $15 a month for up to 250 MB of data and $30 for unlimited use. That’s a bargain compared with hotel Wi-Fi, which can cost $10 to $20 a day.

The AT&T deal is also month-to-month. You can activate it when you know you’ll be on a trip and deactivate it when you’re home again. Plus, AT&T’s 3G fee also offers free access to AT&T’s Wi-Fi hot spots, which could take up the slack in airports, hotels or McDonald’s restaurants.

Is there anything else the 3G model offers that the Wi-Fi one doesn’t?
Potentially. The 3G model has a built-in GPS sensor, while the Wi-Fi-only version does not. Although GPS might seem like overkill for a large-screen device, I expect companies to build iPad applications that take advantage of location and social networks, like location-based news or restaurant reviews. Foursquare, Gowalla and probably even Facebook will find new ways to tap location information to provide services to iPad 3G users.

I’ve heard that the F.C.C. could create free ubiquitous Wi-Fi. Wouldn’t that eliminate the need for 3G?
The Federal Communications Commission has recently been discussing the possibility of a free or very cheap nationwide wireless broadband network. The technology blog Ars Technica warns us not to hold our breath, as we’ve been down this road before. But who knows? Maybe such a network will be available for the fourth — or 14th — generation of the iPad.

What about storage? How much memory do I really need?
If you plan to use the iPad as a laptop replacement, you might want to go with 32 GB or 64 GB to ensure enough storage for music, photos and movies. But if you’re only going to surf the Net, watch the odd movie while traveling and read e-books, the 16 GB model will suffice.

Anything else I should know before making this purchase?
Well, as Steven Jobs might say, there’s one more thing to consider before buying any iPad: do you really want one now?

Some people have lamented that the device doesn’t come with a built-in camera or U.S.B. ports. Or maybe you don’t like the fact that it doesn’t multitask. And as with any new technological product, there are bound to be some annoying bugs.

If all of that bothers you, the best iPad for you may be a second-generation one.

Several Chinese companies have jumped on the tablet PC bandwagon as buyers await the sale of Apple's iPad, possibly presaging wide imitation of the Apple device in China.

Apple hasn't said if it will sell the iPad in China, but some local companies there have already started selling or planning rival tablet computers with Windows 7, the first version of the Microsoft OS to offer a core multitouch control option suited for such devices.

Other Chinese vendors are taking orders for the iPad, planning to buy the device outside of China and informally take it back into the country before reselling it. The iPhone was similarly sold on the gray market in China long before its official release there late last year, and at least 1 million iPhones being used in China were not bought from official distributor China Unicom, according to analyst estimates.

One local company working on its own tablet is Teso, a device maker based in Shenzhen, the southern city known as the home of Chinese knock-off and imitation electronics, locally called "bandit" devices. The company plans to start shipping a 10.1-inch tablet with a multitouch touchscreen and an Intel Atom processor this month, a company employee surnamed Wu said via instant message, where his status message billed the product as an "imitation iPad tablet."

The Teso device will cost around US$280 outside of China and about $330 inside the country, Wu said by phone. The tablet will weigh less than 0.9 kilograms (2 pounds) and allow users to surf the Internet with a 3G mobile connection.

Hanvon Technology, a Chinese maker of e-readers and other devices, plans to start shipping two tablet computers next month. Both will have 10-inch screens, Windows 7 and a price between 4,999 yuan and 5,999 yuan (US$730 to $877), a company marketing employee said. Their CPUs will come from Intel's Atom and Celeron lines.

Another Chinese company, Shenzhen Great Loong Brother Industrial, already sells a tablet computer that looks similar to the iPad. The company has said it wouldn't rule out suing Apple over the similar design, even though, as the blog iPadInsider has noted, the company once described its product as an imitation Apple device on a part of its Web site that has since become inaccessible.

Lenovo is China's top PC maker and a global brand, but it also stepped into the tablet arena early this year by announcing its IdeaPad U1, a laptop with a touchscreen that can be detached and used as a tablet computer.

Many Chinese device makers appear to be waiting to see how the iPad actually sells, but if it performs well then a wave of imitation is certain, said Kevin Wang, an analyst at iSuppli.

"Bandit" mobile phones and netbooks, widely sold at electronics bazaars in China, have appeared both as blatant counterfeits of well-known products like the iPhone and merely as generic-looking devices from unknown brands. But their defining trait has been a low price, often at the cost of quality. The likely problem for imitation tablet PCs in China will be a lack of wide-ranging applications like the pool available for Apple's iPad, Wang said.

When Apple unveiled the device a few months ago, we were told it would be available by March. Rumors began to swirl recently that shipment of the devices was delayed until April. According to the release, the Wi-Fi models of the iPad will be available starting April 3, with the Wi-Fi and 3G models rolled out by late April. Starting on March 12, U.S. customers can pre-order the device either online or at their local Apple retail store. The device will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April.

Pricing has remained the same, with the basic Wi-Fi enabled model starting at $499. Pricing is as follows: $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available in late April for $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB.

Apple is launching with 12 apps designed especially for iPad and will run almost all of the 150,000 apps on the App Store. The supposed Kindle-killer will debut with an iBooks app, which will be available for free download from the App Store in the US on April 3. Apple’s partnered witha number of publishers including the Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Group and Simon & Schuster.

Independent research boutique ChangeWave surveyed 3,171 consumers and found that consumer pre-launch interest in the iPad is high.

Data demonstrates that consumers are more interested in purchasing an iPad than they were the iPhone prior to launch. Also, 27% of existing e-reader owners indicated they would have purchased the iPad over the model they own now.

The study — which was conducted after the iPad announcement — also shows that 40% of respondents in the market to purchase an e-reader in the next 90 days say they will buy an iPad.

That number is quite remarkable on its own, but when compared against the respondents who indicated preferences for the Kindle (28%), Nook (6%), and Sony Reader (1%) the bigger picture starts to become clear. If these numbers are reflective of the larger population, Apple is most certainly a threat to Amazon and the e-book/e-reader industry as a whole.

Some other interesting highlights from the ChangeWave study include:

- Prospective iPad buyers are likely to wait a few months before they make their purchase. 20% will buy two to three months after release, 23% four to six months after release, and 19% seven to 12 months after release.

- 68% of prospective iPad owners are most interested in using the iPad to surf the internet.

- 25% of consumers buying iPads may cut back on previous plans to purchase other Apple products. 10% are putting their iPhone purchase plans on hold, while 9% are saying they may not buy the laptop or iPod they had previously planned to.

Given that the iPad launch date is just a few weeks away, we should soon be able to tell how accurate some of these findings are and whether or not the iPad will put a significant dent into Amazon Kindle sales.

Rupert Murdoch has confirmed, in a Q & A following his announcement of a New York 'metro' section for the Wall Street Journal, that an app for the iPad is under development (WSJ story here, behind the paywall). There's an iPhone app available now, and it's expected that the iPad version will expand upon it, with attention being paid to the iPad's big screen.

What's most interesting about this story is the extreme secrecy with which Apple is handing the process. it seems that WSJ developers do have access to a pre-release iPad, which Murdoch confirms is "kept under padlock and key." Not only that, but an Apple employee turns the key every night to confirm that the iPad is where it should be -- locked up tight, safe and sound. Not even preferred developers have earned Apple's full trust.

Apple hasn’t stated an official release date for its iPad, but rumors suggest the highly anticipated tablet will go on sale on March 26.

Both MacRumors’ Arnold Kim and the Examiner have heard from tipsters that Apple stores will begin selling the iPad on Friday, March 26 at 6 p.m. The Examiner added that “People who camp out for the iPad will receive a special gift.”

That would be similar to the original iPhone launch, which began selling 6 p.m. on Friday, Jun. 29, 2007. (I don’t remember receiving any gifts when I camped out for the iPhone, but I did receive some coffee.)

The Associated Press has unveiled plans to set up a division that would help the news cooperative and member newspapers and broadcasters sell digital content for use on a new generation of electronic readers, and tablet PCs such as the Apple iPad.
In a keynote speech Friday before the Colorado Press Association, Tom Curley, president and chief executive of the AP, said the new business unit would be called the AP Gateway and would become "the launching pad for new products and services from AP and other interested news publishers."

Curley told the CPA convention in Denver that the first Gateway application would be used to deliver news to the iPad, which Apple plans to release in late March. The application would incorporate a paid subscription model and would be open to AP members.

"Beyond that, we expect to offer our content partners a variety of ways to take their content to market, both individually and collectively, directly and indirectly, taking advantage of new business models, including the wide variety of pay-model services now under development," Curley said, according to a transcript of his speech posted by PaidContent.org.

In launching Gateway, the non-profit is offering members a way to take advantage of the "splintering" of the Internet into many channels for news distribution created by the expected growth in the use of new Internet-connected devices, such as smartphones, Curley said. Quoting Forrester Research, the AP CEO said that while 80% of the U.S. population look to get their news for free, "there is a slice of that remaining 20% who will pay for it under the right circumstances."

"Just how big a slice that becomes will depend on how creative and responsive we producers are," Curley said.

The news executive listed three ways to make money in digital media, syndication licensing, advertising, and subscriptions; and said Gateway can enhance all three by tagging, tracking and enabling new business opportunities.

The AP is among news organizations looking to control, and charge for, distribution of its content over the Internet. While news content has been easily accessible for free through a Web browser on a PC, content providers are looking for business models in which subscribers would pay to receive content over mobile devices, which would also be used to deliver advertising.

The need to generate more revenue from content is imperative to the news industry's survival. As subscribers moved to the PC-dominated first generation of the Web, so did advertisers, leaving newspapers and magazines with heavy losses.

To limit unauthorized republication of its news stories, along with those of its members, the AP has created a news registry to track content online. The AP is particularly displeased with online news aggregators that link and quote from other organizations' stories to drive traffic to their own sites.

When the iPad was announced, some media partnerships were announced with it, but it wasn’t hard to guess that, in the period before the device actually comes to the market, we’ll see many more.

We already know that Condé Nast is working on an iPad version of Wired magazine, and we’ve even seen a demo version of it.Now, New York Times reports that Condé Nast is preparing to launch some of its other top magazines on the iPad, with the first (besides Wired) being GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and Glamour. According to the NYT, when iPad arrives in April, GQ will be ready with a tablet version for that same month; Vanity Fair and Wired will follow in June, while The New Yorker and Glamour will have issues sometime in the summer.

“We feel confident enough that consumers will want our content in this new format that we are committing the resources necessary to be there. How large a revenue stream digitized content represents is an answer we hope to learn through this process,” said president and CEO of Condé Nast, Charles H. Townsend.

The magazines will be sold through iTunes (Wired will also be available in other formats); it will be a great test for the future of the iPad and the publishing industry in general. Will you simply browse the Wired website, and get the info from there for free, or will you purchase the paid version of the mag through iTunes? It depends, mostly, on how Condé Nast plans to provide extra value for iPad users.

The Associated Press has announced plans for a paid subscription app for Apple's iPad platform, an app that will deliver AP content directly to consumers. The project will be one of the first products rolled out under a new business division at called AP Gateway that targets Web and mobile delivery of AP content.

"AP Gateway will serve as the launching pad for new products and services from AP and other interested news publishers," Tom Curley, president and CEO of The Associated Press, said in a statement. "It will allow the news industry to deliver the news directly to the consumer in a variety of exciting new ways."

Apple has reportedly been trying to land newspapers to be in its iBooks Store or otherwise deliver paid content on the iPad, but only a few have so far come on board, in part due to concerns about revenue sharing and issues over who has access to and controls subscriber information.

As one of the world's largest news gathering organizations, the AP would be the largest news outfit to announce plans for or otherwise come on board Apple's iPad platform.

The AP's traditional business model has been to syndicate its content out to individual newspapers and other media outlets around the world. The AP itself has not, therefore, been a publisher of its own material. AP Gateway would mark at least a slight shift in that model, though company execs said this was not the main goal of AP Gateway.

"This is not primarily to develop direct-to-consumer products, but that's one of the things we will be doing," Jane Seagrave, Chief Revenue Officer of The AP, told The Financial Times of London. She also said that The AP would be working with its local affiliates in the new business unit, though it is not clear if the organization will be offering content from those affiliates in its iPad app.

It is also unclear if The AP accepted Apple's public terms of a 70/30 revenue split with Apple maintaining control over the customer relationship, or if it was able to negotiate a separate deal with different terms with Apple. The above-mentioned terms have been Apple's standard terms for developers since launching the App Store, and it is the deal with which Apple has approached publishers for iBooks and the iPad.

Rumours point to entry-level £389 model, with high-spec 64GB wi-fi SKU costing £489

The iPad will cost as little as £389 when it eventually arrives in the UK – that’s the claim being made by Geeky Gadgets which says it has received leaked launch price information from a mystery source.

The site says that the base 16GB model will cost £389, with the 32GB costing £439 and the 64GB coming in at £489.

If correct, UK consumers do indeed face a premium compared to their US counterparts. Across the pond the 16GB will cost $499 (£308), the 32GB $599 (£370) and the 4GB $699 (£433).

The site doesn’t yet have any information concerning the top-of-the-range 3G models.The source also claims that the first shipments will arrive in the UK in April and not in March as Apple had previously suggested.

Why I Want An Ipad

Over the past week we’ve looked at why the iPad will be good for contractors and why you might not be the target audience for the device. After considerable thought, I’d like to share why I want an iPad.
I’m not an Apple fanboy – the only Apple device I currently own is a 4 year-old refurbished iPod Nano. I don’t carry an iPhone – I use a Samsung Ace Windows Mobile smartphone. I still like the device because it’s tiny and has great battery life for my trips. I was recently scolded for not using Keynote for my presentations. My main computer is a refurbished Dell XPS M1330 laptop which I’ve enjoyed over the past year although lately the fan has made so much noise that I can’t bring it to SXSW with me. I have been considering purchasing the new Asus ULvt30 laptop as it has a super battery and looks like it would meet my needs well.
So why do I want the Apple iPad? It’s been bashed from blog to blog and fanboys are torching their shrines to Steve Jobs. (side note, I wonder if the fanboys would have loved the device if Jobs gave one to everyone in the audience. You know, just like Google did with the Nexus One. Didn’t see much hate over that way, did ya?)
The Asus laptop weighs in at just under 4 pounds. It’s got great specs and will work perfectly for coding, working on my startup, and all the other heavy lifting that a computer is meant to handle. Everyday I am in NYC at an event, meeting an entrepreneur looking for advice or meeting with a customer of my startup. Many times it would be nice to have a device that I can whip out in a second and show off my startup, look at other startups, review a presentation, etc. Typically I use my mobile for checking my various email accounts and browsing the web using the Skyfire mobile browser. The iPad will be able to handle everything I’ve listed and more and I can travel around with a 1.5 pound machine. If I take the laptop with me, it’s lugging around a 3x heavier machine and then I also have to take a bigger (and heavier) laptop bag as well. The iPad will fit into my lightweight bag with no issues.
ReadWriteWeb had an interesting post about how the iPad will allow startups to create “instant demos”. I very much agree with this premise and could see startups purchasing one just for the demo ability.
I am also hoping that I can use the iPad as my new music playing device where I start a playlist, “hold” the device and stick it into my bag and the music keeps playing.
Based on what I have read, it does appear that I will have some gripes with the device. First, it has no camera – a camera would have been excellent for networking and I am guessing it will be on version 2 – isn’t that how Jobs creates his devices? Jobs says the battery will last 10 hours which probably means 3-4 in real life. I certainly hope the power cord is super light and easy to carry. The iPad also apparently can’t handle multi-tasking which seems stupid because many times you will want to browse the web and listen to a song in your iTunes collection. Apparently there is some issue where Flash doesn’t work on the iPad — not exactly sure how this will affect my Web usage but it is something to consider.
Update: The comments seem to indicate you can play a song in iTunes and work in the browser.
From what I can tell so far, the iPad might also improve my productivity while I am out and about because I can load up on apps that I can use to keep better track of everything going on in my life from scheduling to note taking to contact management.
It looks like there will be adapters that will connect into the iPad to allow for some external functions. I am hoping that a foldable keyboard is one of those options. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like you can carry a second battery. It would also be great if you can plug the iPad into a projector for large group demos and presentations.
I’m not sure whether I will purchase the model with the 3G. My Ace phone handles Bluetooth tethering very well so I could just use that when needed. I’m guessing you can’t add on the 3G later so my guess is that I will take the 3G version. I’m quite certain I will go for the least expensive version. The 3G service plans seem expensive to me – especially since if you only use it a drop, you still pay for the entire month. I am actually willing to bet that one of the sweet spots for the iPad will be for people who are happy with their cell phone but want a smarter device without buying an iPhone or Droid.
So to summarize why I want an iPad:

lightweight
ability to check and respond to emails and handle customer inquiries for my startup
web browser
productivity apps
meeting functionality (review presentations, review apps, discussions)
long battery life
new music player to replace my old Nano

I’d also like to note that I am sure there are other tablet machines on the market that are worth looking into. I have not started this research yet but plan to before looking at the iPad for purchase.
Had the device been available for purchase before SXSW, my bet is that you would see 1,000 or more of the devices in the convention center.
The iPad could also replace my wish of moving into a new mobile device this year. If I have an iPad that tethers to my phone and my phone to handle calls (which Sprint does perfectly), then I am all set.
Overall I think the iPad will be a huge winner for Apple. Ithink the price will drop a bit by mid-year which will get more mainstream users excited about the device. Now I need to work on getting more pageviews so I can pay for the new iPad device.

So how will Apple explain the touch-screen e-reader/Web tablet that's being described, and in some cases derided, as "an iPod Touch on steroids," albeit one that will cost between $499 and $829?

Experts who've made their careers teaching and working in high-tech marketing say it will come down to the very basics of marketing: Focus on how a product will make the proud new owner of this device happier, better-looking, and more satisfied with life, not a boring laundry list of technical specifications.

According to iSuppli, Apple can make the low-end $499 iPad for about $229.

Those costs will fall fairly quickly.

Apple gets a 30% cut of any media sold through its online stores. That can be a nice piece of change, especially when you consider the New York Times isconsidering charging as much as $30 a month for the iPad version of the newspaper.

At that price, the New York Times could offer a bundle deal - a free iPad with an annual subscription. It could also charge advertisers more money for the richer ads.

Other publishers could band together for similar deals, a free iPad with a local newspaper, plus magazine, plus book-of-the-month club subscription.

Apple could offer an iPad to publishers for $100. The publishers would promote their subscription bundlesand the iPad. Apple doesn’t have to spend a dime advertising the iPad — another reason it could offer a cut price deal to publishers.

Clearly, there are a lot of ways that the economics of the iPad and the media industry could be sliced and diced, that make sense to offer a ‘free’ iPad. That might not happen straight away, but it is likely to happen because it can.

A risk with bundled deals might be that customers just want to a cheap iPad and they won’t be reading the publications and that means they won’t be viewing ads. Advertisers will be able to tell because there will be tracking technology that measures engagement and interaction.

But Apple will still benefit because with more iPads in people’s hands, there are more opportunities to sell all kinds of other media, and that means more revenues for Apple. And that’s another reason that Apple can offer iPads for lower prices to publishers, for their bundled deals.

Apple iPad Tablet News : MS Office may be released for iPad

Microsoft is considering the possibility to create a specialized version of its Office package for the tablet iPad. Such information appeared in various websites which refer to Mike Tedesco, product manager at Microsoft.

The company however has not taken a final decision to place a similar modification of the office suite. If Microsoft ever does begin to develop, it will build upon the Office suite for Mac, writes t3.com.

iPad-version of MS Office will need to be tailored to the specifics of the iPhone OS platform and the technical characteristics of the iPad.

Tablet shown recently by Steve Jobs provides 9.7-inch touch screen, 1-GHz processor Apple A4, 64 gigabytes of memory modules wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

iPad is managed by the operating system iPhone OS 3.2 which does not support multitasking.

Feb. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s second-largest mobile-phone maker, plans to offer a tablet computer to ride the wave of demand it expects for Apple Inc.’s iPad.

“We will respond,” J.K. Shin, president of Samsung’s mobile-communication division, said in an interview last night in Barcelona, Spain. Apple’s tablet computer “will create a new market and new demand,” adding that it’s “too early” to give more details on Samsung’s plans.

The South Korean company provides the processor that powers Apple’s iPad, according to market research firm ISuppli Corp., putting Samsung in a position of being both a components supplier and a competitor for the Cupertino, California-based company. The iPad, a touch-screen tablet computer, will go on sale by March, Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said at the Jan. 27 debut of the device.

“This is normal, we have to compete in the market,” Shin said. “At the same time, they are our customer and we are the supplier of components to them.”

Apple's widely anticipated announcement last month that its iPad tablet will ship in March was accompanied by predictions of a new gold rush, in which developers race to bring iPad applications to market.

Now Apple's wishful thinking is being realized. According to app analytics company Flurry, there has been a massive surge in the number of new iPhone OS application projects.

"Developers integrating Flurry analytics into iPhone OS applications in January increased by nearly three times over December," the company said in a blog post on Friday. "This represents the single largest spike in Flurry history, with over 1,600 new iPhone OS application starts for January."

While Amazon certainly has its competitive work cut out for it, the competitor that most ought to be worried about the implications of the iPad is Google. Not just because Google has substantial e-book ambitions of its own, but because the iPad presages a new model for content acquisition and consumption--especially media content--that is the antithesis of Google's search-driven, browser-centric model. If Apple succeeds, it could pose a significant threat to Google's power to attract and generate traffic for multimedia content, undercutting its hugely profitable search ad business.

My fondest memory of my childhood was the day when my grandfather gave me a slate. I was four years old. There was no silicon in that slate — unless you count the silica in the earth itself — that was essentially a thin smooth slab, almost volcanic in color. Along with it came a little piece of chalk, which I would eventually use to write on this slate whose rough edges were covered by a well-made maple wood sheath. I have no idea what this slate cost — maybe one-twentieth of a penny at that time — but to me it was priceless.

For hours at length I would sit with my grandpa and with my mom — learning math, learning how to write proper English sentences, often getting wrapped on the knuckles for messing up my articles. Sometimes I would draw — but mostly I would try and write.

Paper and pencils were expensive and were restricted to finishing up school assignments or “homework” as it was called back then. Over the next few years, whenever I used that particular slate and its subsequent upgrades (it would break way too often), I would start with the proverbial blank screen (or a blank slate). I would write, calculate and articulate.

To me it represented two things. It was a way to spend time with grandpa. It was also a tool for constant education and self-improvement. Of course, I didn’t know these fancy words then. I just knew it was something I couldn’t live without. The very low-brow slate was the very antithesis of cool, but I just loved it.
